30 gallon heat pump water heaters
No maker sells a 30 gallon heat pump water heater: the compressor and evaporator need a tank of about 40 gallons or more to pay off, so the smallest models are 40 gallons. A 40 gallon heat pump is taller than a 30 gallon tank (compare the heights on each product page) and needs the air space every heat pump water heater does: about 700 cubic feet, or a louvered door. If the space is too tight for that, a 30 gallon electric tank or a point-of-use electric tankless heater are the alternatives. The 40 gallon heat pumps below are the closest fit. Nearest sizes: from $1,699 to $2,749 for 4 models from 3 stores, prices checked daily.

$/gal is the price divided by tank capacity. Compare the first-hour rating (FHR) too: it is what decides whether a tank keeps up with your busiest hour. The sizing calculator works out the FHR your household needs and the running cost.
